I think the news is the most interesting news that I have ever heard…

I think he is a little bit stupid because there won’t be any great effect if he fights this battle himself…

I think it will be more efficient if he creates a group on Facebook to invite more people to join his side…

Besides, I think he should practise his movement step by step…He should focus on a few kinds of business first…

Although I think his preparatios are not enough, I admire him. He is brave and creative. He also points out an important point – the market has been monopolised…Problems can only be solved by the conscience of the businessmen. It’s a tragedy.

I am surprised to learn that using this article as a teaching material for an English writing exercise needs a lot of courage, wow. Are our schools really like that now? By the way, to me, your article is not too political. Whenever there is a choice, I always visit the small shops instead of the big chain supermarkets 🙂

fiona, the English education in Hong Kong has always been like this. it is not a matter of then was better than now. even i was studying in a band 1 school in which english was the real medium of instruction, not only in classrooom, but in assembly, even in sports day, only English was spoken. but there was never any discussion of social issues, at least not in any critical sense. and in other schools, teachers dont think students could handle or are interested in anything political, therefore rare is there any discussion of social issue except “softer" issues like pollution. and again, the moral of the lesson is no more than saying “We should protect the environment", no critical reflection is attempted. if you did have experience indepth discussion of social issues in the English classroom, I congratulate you!

as for whether my article is political or not, actually it does not really that matter, after all it is just an ordinary interview. but in my opinion, June Fourth is political, boycotting the property tycoons is political, and protecting roadside trees is political too. As the feminist Carol Hanisch once said, THE PERSONAL IS POLITICAL. It is therefore, not the topic, but how you talk about it that matters. so fiona, at this moment in hong kong, do your shopping in small shops and not in big shopping malls is very political. you have been helping in bringing real changes in HK.
      Thanks for sharing…

i dont think students are not interested in social issus as i always dicuss the hit issue with my classmates and our school will hold some forum to let teachers and students to share their opinion. Of course not all students are concerned about what had happened in the society but i think now more teenagers pay attention to the socity than the past. this is mainly because the spreading of internet, just like me, i can share my opinion to you now and i can know the impact of the big land and ruling class.

        • yatming 說道:

I can’t agree more. It’s always the teacher/the adult who think in their own way and put lots of hurdles for young people. As long as you involve them in an engaging way, they can handle the toughest topic. I always say, there is a fatal limitation of the discussion of HONG KONG KIDS. If you are a too-caring parent, kids will respond you as a spoiled child, but if you look at them and treat them differently, the same kid can surprise you with how creative+independent+enthusiastic they are.
